When Your Kitchen Sink Won't Drain

A clogged kitchen sink is one of those problems that seems minor until it isn't. Standing water, gurgling sounds, or a sink that backs up on both sides usually points to something deeper than a surface-level blockage. When you call Summit Peak Plumbing LLC, you get Marvin Guida, a licensed master plumber (CO #MP.03001524) with 25 years of hands-on experience, not a call center routing you to whoever's available. Marvin diagnoses what's actually causing the problem before touching a single pipe. Call (719) 774-7451 today.

Kitchen sink drain issues come in a few forms: a clogged drain basket, a failing P-trap, corroded or cracked drain pipes, or improper slope on older drain lines that lets water pool instead of run. The fix depends entirely on what Marvin finds when he gets under the sink. Some jobs take an hour. Others involve replacing a section of pipe or reseating the drain assembly and P-trap correctly. What drives cost up is usually access, the age of the existing pipes, and how far the problem extends into the drain line. Every job is different. Contact Summit Peak Plumbing LLC for an accurate estimate.

What a Kitchen Drain Job Actually Covers

Marvin checks all of this before quoting you on anything.

  1. 01

    Drain basket and strainer inspection

A cracked or improperly seated basket lets water and debris bypass the seal, causing slow drains that look like clogs but aren't.

  2. 02

    P-trap evaluation

The P-trap holds water to block sewer gases. If it's clogged, corroded, or pitched wrong, it causes both backup and odor.

  3. 03

    Drain line slope check

Drain lines need the right pitch to flow properly. Too flat and water sits. Too steep and solids get left behind. Either causes chronic slowdowns.

  4. 04

    Full pipe condition assessment

Galvanized and older ABS pipe corrode from the inside out. Marvin checks what you're actually working with before recommending repair versus replace.

Common causes

Why Kitchen Sinks Back Up

Most calls aren't what the homeowner thinks they are.

01

Grease and fat accumulation

Poured-down grease solidifies on cool pipe walls. It narrows the drain slowly until even water barely passes. This is the most common cause we see.

02

Double basin backup

When both sides of a double sink back up together, the blockage is almost always past the point where the two drain lines connect, not in one basin's trap.

03

Garbage disposal plumbing errors

Disposals installed without proper venting or with the dishwasher knockout unpunched create chronic backup issues that look like clogs but won't clear by snaking.

04

Old or corroded pipe

Galvanized steel drain lines common in homes built before the 1980s rust from the inside out, creating rough surfaces that catch every food particle passing through.

05

Improper drain pitch

Drain pipes need a consistent slope toward the main line. DIY installations often get this wrong, and the result is pooling water that never fully clears.

06

Venting issues

A drain that gurgles or drains slowly but shows no visible blockage often has a venting problem. Marvin checks for this specifically because it's easy to misdiagnose.

The process

How Marvin Approaches a Kitchen Drain Call

Three steps from your call to a working drain.

  1. 01

    Diagnose before anything else

Marvin starts by identifying the actual cause. He won't pull a P-trap just to pull one. The diagnosis tells him what repair is appropriate and keeps the job from getting bigger than it needs to be.

  2. 02

    Explain what he found

Before any work starts, Marvin walks you through what he found and what fixing it involves. No surprises. You know what you're agreeing to before he picks up a wrench.

  3. 03

Fix it correctly and test it

Once the repair is done, Marvin runs the water, checks the connections, and confirms the drain flows properly. He doesn't leave until it works the way it should.

Can You Replace Just the Drain in a Kitchen Sink?

garbage disposal plumbing errors work, professional service in Colorado Springs, CO
Yes, and it's a straightforward repair in most cases. The kitchen sink drain assembly, which includes the basket strainer, drain body, tailpiece, and P-trap, can be replaced independently without touching the sink or the supply lines. If the drain basket is cracked, corroded, or leaking at the seal, swapping just that component fixes the leak without a full fixture replacement. Where it gets more involved is when the drain pipe behind the wall or under the floor shows corrosion or damage too. Marvin will tell you honestly what needs replacing and what doesn't. He's not going to recommend a full drain line replacement when a new P-trap and basket solves the problem. For broader fixture work, he also handles faucet installation and toilet repair in the same visit when the scope makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

What is the kitchen sink drain assembly called, and what parts does it include?
The full assembly is called the drain and trap system. It includes the basket strainer (the part you see in the sink basin), the drain body and tailpiece below it, the P-trap (the curved section that holds water and blocks sewer gas), and the drain arm that connects to the wall or floor stub-out. Each component can fail independently, which is why Marvin checks the whole assembly rather than assuming the basket strainer is the only problem.
Why does my kitchen sink back up on both sides at the same time?
A double basin kitchen sink shares a common drain line after each basin's P-trap connects. When both sides back up simultaneously, the blockage is almost always downstream of that shared connection point, not in either individual trap. Snaking one basin won't solve it. The obstruction needs to be cleared in the shared line, and if there's a garbage disposal connected, its plumbing gets checked too.
My kitchen sink drains slowly but I can't find a clog. What causes that?
Slow drainage without an obvious blockage is usually one of three things: grease accumulation narrowing the pipe walls over time, a venting problem preventing proper airflow, or incorrect drain pipe pitch causing water to pool rather than flow. Venting issues in particular get misdiagnosed constantly because they mimic a clog. Marvin checks all three before pulling any hardware.
Can you replace just the kitchen sink drain without replacing the whole sink?
Yes. The drain basket, drain body, and P-trap are separate components from the sink itself. If the drain is leaking at the seal or the basket has corroded through, Marvin can replace just those components. The sink stays in place. The only time a sink replacement becomes relevant is if the sink basin itself is cracked or damaged, which is a different problem entirely.
Is a gurgling kitchen sink a plumbing emergency?
Not an emergency in the immediate sense, but don't ignore it. Gurgling after water drains indicates negative pressure in the drain line, which typically points to a blocked or undersized vent stack. Left alone, it usually progresses to slower draining, odors, and eventually a backed-up sink. Addressing it before it fails completely is cheaper and less disruptive than dealing with it after water is sitting in your basin.
What's the difference between a drain repair and a drain cleaning?
Summit Peak Plumbing LLC handles drain repair, which means correcting the physical components of your drain system: replacing corroded pipe, reseating a drain basket, fixing a poorly pitched trap arm, or swapping out a failed P-trap. Sewer line cleaning and hydrojetting are outside the scope of what Marvin offers. If your problem is a straightforward mechanical failure or damaged hardware, that's exactly what he fixes.
