Blocked Sink or Tub Drain? Here's What To Do

A blocked sink or a slow tub drain isn't just annoying. Left alone, standing water backs up into adjacent fixtures, and what started as a simple clog turns into a bathroom leak repair situation that costs real money to sort out. Marvin Guida, Master Plumber and owner of Summit Peak Plumbing LLC, handles drain repairs across El Paso County Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. CO License #MP.03001524. If water's not moving the way it should, call (719) 774-7451 and get Marvin on the job, not a dispatcher, not a subcontractor.

Drain work ranges from a straightforward tub drain replacement to a shower cartridge replacement that's been causing water to sit and pool in the pan. The scope of a repair drives the cost: how deep the blockage sits, whether the drain hardware itself needs replacing, how accessible the trap and overflow assembly are, and whether the original install was done properly in the first place. A tub drain somebody DIY'd without a P-trap is a different job than a simple drain screen swap, and pricing reflects that. Every job is different, contact Summit Peak Plumbing LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Summit Peak Handles on Drain Calls

Interior drain work on tubs, sinks, and showers, scoped clearly so you know what's included.

  1. 01

    Tub Drain Repair and Replacement

Whether the stopper mechanism has failed, the drain body is corroded, or whoever installed it skipped the P-trap entirely, Marvin diagnoses and fixes it. He carries quality Watco hardware and similar components and won't upsell you on parts you don't need.

  2. 02

    Shower Drain and Cartridge Service

A worn shower cartridge can cause water temperature swings, poor pressure, or slow drainage in the pan. Marvin replaces cartridges and drain assemblies as part of the same visit when the issue warrants it. See the full shower cartridge replacement page for details on that specific repair.

  3. 03

Bathroom Sink Drain Clearing and Repair

Blocked sink? Marvin works through the trap, clears the obstruction, and checks the drain hardware while he's in there. If the stopper linkage is the culprit, he fixes that too rather than leaving you with a drain that works but won't hold water.

  4. 04

    Overflow and P-Trap Repairs

Missing P-traps and leaking overflow assemblies are among the most common things Marvin finds on service calls in older homes. He brings work up to current code and, when the ceiling or wall has to come down to do it right, he documents everything clearly before he starts.

SCOPE CLARITY

One Thing We Don't Do

Summit Peak does not offer sewer line cleaning. That's a separate trade with different equipment, and Marvin won't take your money for something he doesn't specialize in. What he does handle is interior drain work: the fixture, the trap, the drain body, the overflow, and the branch drain line within the home. If your problem turns out to be a main sewer line issue, he'll tell you plainly and point you in the right direction. You won't get billed for a diagnosis that goes nowhere. For anything related to backed-up branch drains inside the home, that's squarely in scope.

THE PROCESS

How a Drain Call Works With Marvin

  1. 01

    You Call, Marvin Picks Up

Call (719) 774-7451 any day between 8 AM and 5 PM. Marvin takes the call himself, asks the right questions about what you're seeing, and gives you a straight read on whether it's something he can handle on the same visit.

  2. 02

    He Finds the Real Cause

Marvin doesn't assume. He checks the drain body, the trap, the overflow, and the surrounding plumbing before touching anything. A slow tub drain might be a clogged screen or a collapsed P-trap or a failed drain seal. The fix depends on what's actually wrong.

  3. 03

He Fixes It and Shows You the Work

Repairs are made with quality components and brought to code. Marvin walks you through what he did, shows you the before state if it helps, and tells you what to watch for. No mystery, no leaving you guessing about what you paid for.

When to Call Instead of DIY

01

Water Drains Slowly Every Single Time

A slow drain that comes back within a day or two of plunging is telling you something. The blockage is either deep in the line, in the trap configuration, or the drain hardware itself is restricting flow. Plunging isn't fixing it.

02

You Smell Sewer Gas Near the Drain

That smell almost always means a dry or missing P-trap. It's a code violation, and it means sewer gases are entering your living space. This one shouldn't wait. Call Marvin. It's a straightforward repair when caught early.

03

Water Is Backing Up Into Other Fixtures

If flushing the toilet makes the tub drain gurgle, or running the sink backs water into the tub, that's a drain system problem, not a single fixture issue. Marvin can assess whether it's a branch drain problem he can handle or something deeper.

04

The Previous Repair Didn't Hold

Plenty of the calls Marvin gets are from homeowners who had someone else fix a drain and it failed inside a year. If the hardware was wrong, the trap wasn't set right, or the repair was done without proper venting, the problem will come back. Marvin fixes the underlying issue.

Frequently asked questions

Do you handle tub drain repairs where the P-trap is missing or wrong?
Yes, and it's more common than you'd think. A lot of DIY tub drain installs skip the P-trap or install it at the wrong angle, which causes odor problems and slow drainage. Marvin has done this repair in tight spaces, including drop ceilings with limited clearance. He brings the work up to current Colorado plumbing code and uses hardware that's built to last.
What's the difference between a drain blockage and a drain hardware problem?
A blockage is organic material, soap scum, or debris sitting inside the line. Hardware problems are things like a corroded drain body, a failed stopper linkage, or an improperly sloped trap. Blockages can sometimes be cleared at the surface. Hardware problems require actual repair or replacement. Marvin determines which situation you have before doing any work, so you're not paying for the wrong fix.
Can you fix a shower drain that's slow even after I've cleaned the screen?
If you've cleaned the screen and the drain is still slow, the restriction is usually further down. It could be the trap, a partial clog deeper in the branch line, or a shower cartridge issue affecting water flow and pressure. Marvin traces the problem to its actual source. There's no point snaking a drain that's slow because of a cartridge failure.
Do you offer drain cleaning with a sewer snake or hydro jetting?
Summit Peak handles interior drain work, including trap clearing and drain line issues within the home. We don't offer sewer line cleaning or hydro jetting services. If Marvin determines your drain problem is originating in the main sewer line rather than the interior branch drains, he'll tell you that directly and you won't be billed for work that can't solve it.
How long does a tub drain repair typically take?
A straightforward tub drain replacement usually takes one to two hours. If the job involves removing a section of ceiling, sweating copper pipe, updating the overflow assembly, or correcting a venting issue, plan for more time. Marvin walks you through the scope before he starts, so there are no surprises mid-job about how long or how much.
What if my slow drain is in an older home with original plumbing?
Older homes in the area sometimes have cast iron drain lines or galvanized steel, both of which corrode from the inside and restrict flow over time. Marvin has worked in older construction frequently enough to know what he's likely to find and how to deal with it. He'll tell you plainly if the drain condition points toward a re-pipe conversation rather than a patch.
