Finding and Fixing Bathroom Leaks Right

Bathroom leak repair starts with finding the actual source, and that's harder than it sounds. A drip under the vanity, water staining the ceiling below a bathroom, a toilet that leaves a puddle after every flush. Each of these has a different root cause, and the fix that works for one won't touch the other. Marvin Guida, Master Plumber and owner of Summit Peak Plumbing LLC (CO license #MP.03001524), has been diagnosing and repairing bathroom leaks for 25 years. He's seen what happens when a slow leak gets ignored for a few weeks. It's not pretty. Call (719) 774-7451 and get it looked at before the drywall starts coming apart.

What drives the cost of bathroom leak repair is mostly access and scope. A leaking faucet installation gone wrong is an hour of work. A supply line that's been weeping inside a wall for months might mean cutting drywall, identifying corroded pipe sections, and repairing or replacing what's there. Shower pans, toilet flanges, drain connections, shutoff valves. Each job is different, and the right fix depends on what's actually leaking and how far the water traveled. Marvin works through the repair methodically, explains what he found and what he's doing about it, and doesn't upsell work that isn't needed. Every job is different, contact Summit Peak Plumbing LLC for an accurate estimate.

Common Sources

Where Bathroom Leaks Actually Come From Actually

Most bathroom leaks trace back to one of a handful of spots, Marvin checks all of them.

01

Toilet Base and Flange

Water around the base of a toilet usually means a failed wax ring or a cracked flange. Left alone, it rots the subfloor. A toilet repair catches this early.

02

Faucet and Supply Lines

A dripping faucet or weeping supply line connection under the sink adds up fast. Worn cartridges, corroded valve seats, and loose compression fittings are the usual suspects.

03

Shower and Tub Drain

Tub and shower drains can leak at the drain body connection or at the P-trap below. This type of leak often shows up as a stain on the ceiling in the room below. A tub drain repair addresses this before it spreads.

04

Shutoff Valves

Angle stops behind toilets and under sinks fail over time, especially in older homes. A valve that's been in place for decades can crack or seize when touched. Marvin replaces these before they become the bigger problem.

05

Pipe Connections Inside Walls

When water appears on a floor or ceiling with no obvious fixture nearby, the leak is usually in the wall or above the ceiling. This is where 25 years of diagnostic experience matters most.

Our Process

How Marvin Approaches a Bathroom Leak

Marvin doesn't start cutting drywall until he knows exactly what he's cutting into. The repair follows the diagnosis, not the other way around.

  1. 01

    Locate the Source

Marvin traces the leak from where water appears back to where it originates, checking fixtures, supply lines, drain connections, and valves before opening anything up.

  2. 02

    Explain the Repair

Before any work starts, Marvin walks through what he found, what needs to happen to fix it, and what options exist. No surprises at the end of the job.

  3. 03

    Fix It and Verify

The repair gets done, tested under pressure, and inspected before Marvin leaves. The goal is water where it belongs and nowhere else.

When to Call

Signs a Bathroom Leak Needs Professional Repair

  1. 01

Water on the floor after every flush or shower

Consistent pooling isn't a caulk problem. It's a connection or seal problem, and it's getting worse every time the fixture runs.

  2. 02

Staining or soft spots on the ceiling below a bathroom

This means water has been traveling for a while. The ceiling stain is where it ends up. The source is somewhere above it, inside the floor structure.

  3. 03

Water meter moving with all fixtures off

If you shut off every valve and faucet in the house and the meter still moves, there's an active leak somewhere. Don't wait on this one.

  4. 04

Mold or musty smell near a fixture

Mold in a bathroom cabinet or near a toilet base means moisture has been sitting there long enough to grow something. The leak came first.

What a Proper Bathroom Leak Repair Looks Like

Plumbing fixtures and components including copper tubing and valves used in bathroom leak repairs
A properly repaired bathroom leak doesn't leave any trace it existed. That means the source is fixed, not patched around. It means supply lines, drain connections, and any affected hardware are checked and either confirmed solid or replaced. Marvin doesn't consider a job done until he's run the fixture, verified there's no movement at the connections, and looked at what the water was doing before he got there. If a toilet installation or fixture swap is the right fix rather than a repair, he'll tell you that too, and explain why. That's a distinction that matters when you're getting a repair quote from someone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my bathroom leak is coming from a drain or a supply line?
Supply line leaks happen whenever the water is on and stop when it's off. Drain leaks happen during and right after use, and often appear as staining on ceilings below or soft spots in the floor near the fixture. Marvin checks both during a bathroom leak repair, the visible water rarely tells you the full story on its own.
Can a slow bathroom leak cause structural damage?
It can. A supply line dripping inside a wall or a toilet base leaking onto a wood subfloor will eventually rot the framing underneath. Most of the severe cases Marvin encounters started as a slow drip someone noticed and then ignored for a few months. The repair cost goes up the longer it sits.
How much does bathroom leak repair cost?
It depends on what's leaking and how accessible the repair is. A loose supply line connection under a vanity is a quick fix. A pipe leaking inside a wall behind tile is a different scope entirely. Marvin won't quote a bathroom leak repair sight-unseen, and he won't inflate the scope once he's there. Every job is different, contact Summit Peak Plumbing LLC for an accurate estimate.
Does a bathroom leak always require opening the wall?
Not always. Many bathroom leaks originate at accessible points, shutoff valves, supply connections, toilet flanges, or drain assemblies, and don't require cutting into the wall at all. When wall access is needed, Marvin makes the smallest opening necessary to do the repair correctly and explains exactly what he's doing and why before he starts.
What should I do while waiting for a plumber to arrive for a bathroom leak?
Shut off the water supply to the leaking fixture if you can find the local shutoff valve, usually located under the sink or behind the toilet. If you can't find a local shutoff, the main shutoff for the house works. Don't run the fixture until the repair is done. If water is pooling near electrical outlets or on the ceiling above a fixture below, keep people out of that area.
My toilet leaks only sometimes, not every flush. Is that still a problem?
An intermittent toilet leak is still a leak. The wax ring and flange seal don't get better on their own, and an inconsistent seal usually means the toilet is rocking slightly on the flange, which accelerates the failure. A toilet repair now is cheaper than a subfloor replacement later. Marvin can assess the flange condition and tell you exactly what's going on.
